Premiere of “I, Zarah” on 31 May in Villach

She was an icon, an opportunist and a fellow traveler. Few artists were as ambivalent as the Swedish NS-film actress Zarah Leander. With the play “I, Zarah or the wild flesh of the last diva”, a production of the neuebuehnevillach http://neuebuehnevillach.at, the Austrian author Franzobel raises a critical look at her brittle biography and asks for guilt, responsibility and self-doubt. Under the direction of Christine Wipplinger, the piece will be celebrating its gala debut at the European Tolerance Talks on May 31 at 7:30 pm during a shipping along the Drau in Villach.

“The play raises elementary questions that only your own conscience can answer,” explains director Wipplinger. “Is it pure art, regardless of the political environment in which an artist lives and works? Is it reprehensible to arrange for his own success with the mighty, or do I need to know what is happening around me? Are questions which concern not only the artist, but all of us, “says Wipplinger.
