GROWTH in the focus of the Tolerance Talks 2023 WAHRHEIT im Fokus der Toleranzgespräche 2024 Die ganze Wahrheit über Europa, die neue Medienordnung und die Kosten dafür “Truth – What is real?” is the subject of the 10th European Tolerance Talks in the Carinthian mountain village of Fresach from May 15th to 18th, 2024 – and the focus is on the diverse concerns about increasing attempts to influence democratic elections through news manipulation and alternative facts. Over 30 experts from philosophy and religion, business and science will provide contributions to the debate. The program is available here: Program May 15th: Ethics Forum in the Bambergsaal Villach At the start of the tolerance talks in Villach, ORF presenter Renata Schmidtkunz invites the Czech author Radka Denemarková to talk about her experience. The controversial writer will report that freedoms and truths that we almost take for granted – namely pluralism, the rule of law, freedom of travel, individual development opportunities and universal human rights – are not at all commonplace in autocracies and dictatorships, indeed in many countries around the world are self-evident. (Bamberg Hall Villach, 6 p.m.) May 16th: European Forum on Truth and Reality The opening of the European Forum in Fresach will be hosted by the young author Evelyn Bubich (What’s wrong with the World: What’s wrong with the truth?) and the accomplished veteran journalist and columnist Armin Thurnher (The whole truth: Perspectives for a new media order). The program will then include panels on the European elections (what populists want and how they obscure reality) and on defending against disinformation and manipulation (how modern technologies manipulate politics and people). (Museum Fresach, from 9 a.m.). This time the guests include well-known names from the media industry, including Politico editor-in-chief Matthew Karnitschnig, NEWS publisher Horst Pirker, radio producer Udo Bachmair and the former editor-in-chief of the Kleine Zeitung, Antonia Gössinger. Also present are the author Julya Rabinowich, the democracy researcher Günther Ogris, the media researcher Fritz Hausjell and the philosophers Larissa Kreiner, Alice Pechriggl and Claudia Paganini. The 2024 Tolerance Prize of the city of Villach will be awarded there on Thursday evening. May 17th: Economic Forum on the Cost of Truth The economic forum in Fresach will open with a conversation by the great Berlin psychologist and risk researcher Gerd Gigerenzer about “dealing with uncertainty”, followed by a three-way conversation with the Berlin State Secretary Wolf Heinrich Reuter and the Vienna business trustee Alfred Brogyányi about the costs of the truth and how the sustainable restructuring of the economy can succeed. (Museum Fresach, from 9 a.m.). In the afternoon, computer science philosopher Peter Reichl will speak about the “truth of digitization machines”, followed by a panel about the opportunities and risks of modern technologies. “Carinthia in real data and false facts” is presented by economist Norbert Wohlgemut, followed by a discussion with political scientist Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle about, among other things, “dealing with statistics and other fairy tales”. Young poetry slammers will complete the event on Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. Day tickets are available from 60 euros, with a 50% discount for students and teachers.
